The Edible Garden

Children’s Vegetable Garden Ideas

What could be more exciting than being able to not only grow plants but eat them too?! An edible garden can be fun for the whole family! Growing vegetables with children can be rewarding, educational and provide hours of entertainment. It can also encourage healthy eating and engage even the fussiest of eaters! Kids are more likely to want to eat the food that they have grown!

A kids vegetable patch or herb garden also teaches responsibility, patience and improves self confidence. Depending on your child’s age give them tasks they can be responsible for and watch them reap the benefits for their hard work. Tasks you could give them include watering the plants, preparing soil, digging holes or planting little seedlings.

What is the easiest vegetable to grow?

It is important to choose the right vegetables to plant. When choosing easy vegetables for kids to grow it is important to consider your climate. It is a good idea to check the seed packet as it will give you information about how much space and light your plant will need as well as the optimum soil conditions and number of days from sowing to harvest.

Of course gardening teaches our kids patience but we don’t want them waiting too long so they give up all together! For best results and to keep your kids engaged choose fast growing, hardy, drought tolerant varieties. Plants such as beans, peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and cucumbers are great options and their rapid growth can be extremely satisfying!
